Financial Check during the RFP process

We are currently looking to add a clause to our RFP that give us the ability to check the financial strength of the highest rated firm where the investment is significant and the length of the relationship with the successful Proponent could be ten years plus. (ie: Purchase of a financial software)

Publicly traded firms are not an issue, but private firms are unlikely to share their financials.

Does anyone have experience with this? If so, we would love to hear how it is executed.
